That’s How It Was by Maureen Duffy

This semi-autobiographical novel is a love story – but this time the intense relationship is between a mother and child as seen through the eyes of the child. Paddy is the illegitimate daughter of TB stricken Louey. Through education she manages to escape her family’s poverty but her eye is always on her mother. Set in wartime England, it evokes the working-class life of that period and the mother and daughter's changing relationship.
Maureen Duffy was born in Sussex.
