The Go-Between by L.P. Hartley

This novel is narrated by Leo who, in his sixties, discovers his boyhood diary of 1900, revealing how he was the innocent 'go-between' at his friend's house, carrying letters between his friend's sister and her lover. Imbued by the atmosphere of Edwardian England and an undercurrent of class tensions, it details the anxiety for love and the agony of betrayal.
L.P. Hartley was born in Cambridgeshire.
