From Pictures to Words - a guide to choosing books for beginner readers: Rhyme

Bert’s Wonderful News by Sam McBratney
Published by Walker Books Ltd., 1998
ISBN 0-7445-5914-6

Bert’s Wonderful News is a perfect selection of stories for young readers to enjoy alone. Seven independent chapters can be read individually as self-contained stories that young children will identify with. All together they provide an interesting account of Bert’s life with his dad and his dad’s friend Liz whom Bert likes very much.

Bert feels he never has any News to tell at school so when he gets lost in a big department store with moving stairs and nice smells, he is sure it’s never happened to Charlie or Meg or Geraldine Greer and it will be his big news for teacher.

But as always Geraldine Greer spoils his news by telling the whole story to teacher and all his classmates before he gets a chance to speak.

But Bert’s most wonderful news of all comes when Dad tells him he is going to marry Liz and this time even Geraldine Greer can’t spoil the story.
