From Pictures to Words - a guide to choosing books for beginner readers: Rhyme

Boom Chicka Boom by Liz Weir
Published by The O’Brien Press, 1995
ISBN 0-86278-417-4

This is a wonderful collection of poetry, stories and action rhymes from one of Ireland’s best known storytellers, Liz Weir. “Going to Granny’s”, the first story in the collection, is introduced by the author as a participation story for everyone to join in.

Boom Chicka Boom by Liz Weir

Children are invited to help pack Susie’s case, get settled in for the night and choose her companions. With lots of repetition, and instructions from Liz on how to provide the sound effects, the story comes to life and is typical of the remaining stories and poems to follow.

The author’s energy and zest exude through her writing with each poem, action rhyme or story coming alive to enthral young readers.

The book works equally well for 6 to 8 year olds to read themselves, or alternatively, it is an ideal read-aloud for pre-schoolers.
