From Pictures to Words - a guide to choosing books for beginner readers: Rhyme

The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss
Published by HarperCollins Ltd., 1997
ISBN 0-00-171303-5

Dr. Seuss’ books are traditionally acclaimed as learning-to-read books. Simple to read, zany stories, silly rhymes and crazy drawings combine to endear the whole range to children. The Cat in the Hat character offers lots of “good fun that is funny” to Sally and her brother whose boredom the reader can almost feel in Dr. Seuss’ description in the opening rhyming lines of the story.

Complete chaos takes over in the house while mother’s out despite the warnings of the Fish in the Pot! The trademark red and blue colours of Dr. Seuss’ books carried throughout the whole story add to children’s sense of familiarity with all books in the series.
