From Pictures to Words - a guide to choosing books for beginner readers: Humour

Dad on the Run by Sarah Garland
Published by HarperCollins, 1995
ISBN 0-00-674748-5

Dad on the Run is a story in the Colour Jets series from HarperCollins Publishers. For children who are beginning to read alone this series will certainly appeal, with its humourous stories, full colour illustrations and a mixture of traditional and comic-style text.

Beano’s dad, Mr Baxter, has a bad start to his day but it gets worse as the day goes on.

He is wearing his pyjamas, Mrs Baxter’s high heeled slippers, his car has been taken by his neighbour, he is miles from home and trying to hide out in Beano’s school.

Surely things will improve? Or perhaps he should have stayed in bed.
