A holiday in France turns into an exciting adventure for Tom, when he and his family stay in a gîte overlooking one of France’s dormant volcanoes. Tom has inherited his fascination with volcanoes from his Dad who died two years earlier.

For the first time in months Mum seems truly happy and Tom is determined to keep her that way. In fact the concern he has for his Mum is an underlying theme of the whole story.

Escape the Volcano by Stephanie Dagg

Even when Tom, his friend Kevin and his sister Anna get trapped in underground caves they can’t help but appreciate the adventure as they marvel at the stalagmites and find cave drawings.

The research carried out by their new friend, a scientist who is studying the same cave system, helps to lead them to safety. The story ends with Tom’s realisation that he will be seeing a lot more of Alan the scientist in future, as his friendship with Mum deepens.

Other titles in this series for independent readers by Stephanie Dagg include Escape the Avalanche, Escape the Flood and Escape the Twister.
