From Pictures to Words - a guide to choosing books for beginner readers: Rhyme

The Finger Eater by Dick King-Smith
Published by Walker Books
ISBN 0-7445-2435-0
Illustrations © Arthur Robins, 1992

The Finger Eater was first published by Walker Books in1992. It was re-launched in the Sprinters series in 1994 and is still a great children’s favourite. Dick King-Smith is one of the world’s favourite children’s authors and has won numerous awards for his writing.

In this rather gruesome story which is not for the faint-hearted, Ulf the nasty finger-eating troll meets his match in the crafty little girl, Gudrun who tricks him into eating a deer antler, thinking it was her hand.

Lots of amusing comic-style illustrations separate the text, some of which is also written in comic-book style. Dick King-Smith is renowned for his witty portrayal of human and animal behaviour, very much in evidence in this story.
