From Pictures to Words - a guide to choosing books for beginner readers: Rhyme

The Lost Fairy by Marian Broderick
Published by The O’Brien Press Ltd., 2001
ISBN 0-86278-725-4

Flora the fairy was extremely pretty and extremely proud. She enjoyed nothing better than having the inferior snowmen and reindeer further down the Christmas tree look up to her for the whole of the holidays. She was however, a little wary of the bright star resting just below her. Incredible as it seemed, she had heard of some people who put a star at the top of the Christmas tree instead of a fairy.

The Lost Fairy by Marian Broderick

Flora had sat on her first tree ninety years ago and wasn’t going to give up her place to any silly star. Then on Christmas Eve, Flora falls off the tree and the family are too busy to put her back up. Fortunately Lily the Little comes to the rescue and Flora finds you’re never too old or too pretty to learn a lesson.

The Lost Fairy is a Yellow Flag Reader and is one of the stories in the Flyers series by O’Brien Press, best suited to children aged between six and eight years old.
