From Pictures to Words - a guide to choosing books for beginner readers: Rhyme

My Dog Lively by Patrick Deeley
Published by The O’Brien Press, 2001
ISBN 0-86278-723-8

Jenny wakes up on the morning of her sixth birthday, to find to her delight that she’s been given a present of a collie dog. For five years she’s had presents of soft toy dogs and can hardly believe it when a real live dog jumps up and bumps her on the nose.

And indeed real and live he is! Jenny decides to call him Lively and he very much lives up to his name.

My Dog Lively by Patrick Deeley

He barks at cats, snaps at bees, dives in the pond after the ducks and chases squirrels up trees. Just when Jenny’s mum is prepared to give him a second chance, deciding he’s a young dog and requires lots of patience, he gets even worse. Both Jenny and her mum decide he must go to the school for dogs.

My Dog Lively is an O’Brien Panda book for beginner readers and shares all the usual characteristics of books in this series; a simple but exciting storyline, lots of illustration, some words in bold print and the added bonus of a hidden panda to be found somewhere in the story.
