This is the perfect book for a six year old child who wants to read his or her own story, as are other titles in the Goldcrest series published by Poolbeg. Young readers will be encouraged by four or five lines of well-spaced text on the first page, which is two- thirds illustration.

A Present from Egypt by Stephanie Baudet

The Post Office van arrives with another most peculiar present from Sam’s Uncle Max in Egypt. It’s a camel. He had previously sent them a rickshaw from China.

The camel, christened Sybil by Sam’s mum, provides practical solutions to everyday problems. She even saves the day when Mr Longshanks - the stilt-walker and the star attraction for the fete - breaks his leg and can’t lead the procession. Sybil automatically takes his place, just as she takes the place of the family car when it won’t start, and takes Sam and his Dad to school and work.

Surprise and humour portrayed by both words and pictures will sustain the young reader’s interest throughout the story.
