Stig of the Dump is a series of funny and exciting adventures that begin with Barney’s plummet into the chalk-pit in the dump. Straying near the chalk-pit was the thing he was most warned against but, of course, it was the thing he most wanted to do.

The suspense generated in the opening chapter will make reading the whole book an absolute must. The fact that Stig the cave man wears only rabbit skins and speaks only in grunts doesn’t matter to Barney, underlining the ability of children to communicate without words.

His sister and grandmother think Stig is purely a figment of Barney’s imagination. Barney does nothing to convince them of the truth, knowing he will be left in peace to share several adventures with his friend. These adventures culminate in a trip back in time to share in Stig’s tribal party.

First published in 1963, this children’s classic will be enjoyed for its sense of excitement and adventure and for its commentary on true friendship as much today as it was then.
