From Pictures to Words - a guide to choosing books for beginner readers:
Children's Classics

The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame
Published by The Penguin Group, 1994
ISBN 0-14-036685-7
Illustrations © Robin Lawrie, 1994

The reader’s attention is engaged from the very beginning of The Wind in the Willows. The well-loved story of Ratty, Badger, Mole and Toad and their adventures on the river bank and in the wild wood, make this a classic to keep, read and read again over the years.

Children will relate to many of Mole’s personality traits including his boastfulness, his greed, and his lack of apprehension when trying out anything new.

A total of 242 pages in this edition make for quite a long story. Children of this age might be glad to have some chapters read to them. Having the story read aloud should also help to keep their interest which might otherwise wane in a story of this length.
