From Pictures to Words - a guide to choosing books for beginner readers: Rhyme

The Witch’s Dog by Stephanie Dagg
Published by Mentor Books, 1998
ISBN 1-902586-00-X

Cackling Carol must be the only witch in the world who has a dog ride on her broomstick with her instead of a cat. Cackling Carol hates cats. When she receives a message from Witch Matilda warning that the evil Wizard Egbert is in the area, Big Roddy – the biggest, shaggiest dog found by Cackling Carol in the dog’s home – goes on full alert. Cackling Carol is furious when the other witches in her coven find her dog hilarious.

The Witch’s Dog by Stephanie Dagg

When Wizard Egbert turns up at the meeting disguised as a rat, with a mission to change all the witches’ spell books into floppy disks – (witches were not very good with new technology) – Roddy is immune to the cat-sleeping spell Egbert weaves, and saves the day.

Stephanie Dagg writes for children of all ages. The Witch’s Dog is ideally suited to beginner readers, as are the other books in the series, De-Witched and Witching Again.
