From Pictures to Words - a guide to choosing books for beginner readers: Rhyme

The Worst Witch by Jill Murphy
Published by The Penguin Group, 1978
ISBN 0-140-31108-4

This Young Puffin book has many of the characteristics of the earlier Puffin series such as simple sentences and pictures throughout. It continues the reading graduation from simpler books published by The Penguin Group to stories for confident readers with longer, more developed chapters.

The Worst Witch is the first in a series of stories that tell of the exploits of Mildred Hubble, the worst witch at Miss Cackle’s Academy.

It’s Mildred Hubble’s first year at Miss Cackle’s Academy for witches and she is never out of trouble. She gets her spells wrong with some very strange results. Her classmate Ethel, on the other hand, is the exact opposite – her spells always work, she’s always top of the class and Miss Hardbroom is always nice to her.

Things can only get worse when Mildred turns Ethel, the teacher’s pet, into a pig. In fact things get so bad that poor Mildred decides to run away, and in so doing saves the entire Academy from total disaster.

Children who have enjoyed the escapades of Harry Potter in print or on film will find many similarities and lots of equally entertaining adventures in the Worst Witch books which are more accessible to younger readers.
