Ruby

Lonely, despised and bullied, how can Ruby find the strength to fight back?

‘I could run away . . . Go far, far away . . . It will not matter . . . I did not know how much he hated me.

Ruby is lonely, desperately lonely. Friendless and despised at school as an Uncle Tom and, since the death of her mother, oppressed at home by her bullying and possessive father, Calvin, she feels worthless and unloved. Unlike her sister, Phyllisia, she can find no escape in burying herself in books.

Then she meets Daphne, beautiful, strong, ambitious Daphne, and they become friends - and more than friends. Their relationship gives Ruby a taste for life and a new strength, strength she needs if she is to stand up to the tyrannical and over-protective rule of Calvin.
