On the 21st of January 2000, Micheal Martin, then Minister for Education, launched the National Reading Initiative to raise awareness in the public of the importance of reading and of improving the quality of the teaching of reading. The Babies Love Books Project was designed with these aims in mind. In September 2000 Clare County Library organised and presented one thousand six hundred reading packs to the Mid Western Health Board for distribution to parents in County Clare. Each pack contains a collection of board and picture books especially suited to young children. An instruction leaflet on "how to bring books alive" designed by the National Reading Initiative is also included. This pack is available from Health Board clinics throughout the County for all children born in the year 2000 and is presented to parents at their childs nine-month check-up. |
