World Book Day takes place on Thursday
March the 3rd. World Book Day has been designated by UNESCO as a worldwide
celebration of books and reading, and is marked in over 30 countries around
the globe last year. The origins of the day we now celebrate in Ireland
come from Catalonia, where roses and books were given as gifts to loved
ones on St. George’s Day - a tradition started some 80 years ago.
To celebrate World Book Day 2005, a number of events are taking place in Clare Libraries - a new book promotion for adults and children, the option for visitors to the library to send e-cards recommending a good read to friends and family through the library website and a children’s quiz competition. Launch of new Book promotion
Consistent with Clare County Library’s policy of offering themed collections to increase awareness of and access to its extensive range of books a new promotion will be launched on World Book Day. Eureka! A popular science book promotion will be launched in Ennistymon Library by North Clare secondary school teacher, John Sims. John is no stranger to the world of science; he and his students at Mary Immaculate Secondary School, Lisdoonvarna having achieved numerous awards in the Young Scientist’s Competition over the years. Eureka! is a selection of science books for adults and children that have either won or been shortlisted for the Aventis Prize and is the first non-fiction book promotion undertaken by the library. The prize is awarded to the authors of popular non-fiction science and technology books that are judged to contribute most towards making science more accessible to public audiences. Subjects covered range in diversity from evolution to space or the human body to the oceans. World Book Day Children’s Quiz The First Ireland Library Week will be celebrated during the week of 7th - 12th March 2005. See the library website at www.clarelibrary.ie for events taking place in your local library during Ireland Library Week. |
