Holy well | Shanballysallagh | Kilkeedy | CL018-00303- |
Unusually for a "well", the Tobereentemple is not a hole
in the ground but a "bullaun" stone, i.e. a large hollowed-out
stone basin about 55cms deep and of similar diameter. It has no visible
places where water can enter or leave but it is said that it never runs
dry and, if emptied, it is found to be full the next morning. One of
Cromwell's soldiers polluted the well and then, fittingly, bled to death
soon after at Poll a'Torcaigh near Ballyteige in Ruan where his ghost
is said to still haunt the place.
