According to the enclosed literature this site was built c. 1466 A.D. by the King of Thomond. Such a statement is, without doubt, based on a reference by Westropp, which states:
“ Ballymulcassell (Mountcashel) (was built) by Conor na Srona O’Brien, who died in 1470…” (1899, page 351).

Occupation continued down to the late sixteenth century, at least:
“… The old Castle of Ballymulcashel stands in good preservation in the Townland of that name. This castle is mentioned in the College List (1580 A.D.) and is said to have belonged to Teige Oultagh (O’Brien?)…” Curry, 1839, page 112.
