The original register has not survived. The question marks are all his.
“Wife of” has been added to a large number of entries made in the 1850s, so that anyone looking under the column headed “Mother’s Surname” will understand that, during that period, the surname given was not the mother’s own name, but that of her husband. However, in an area where there were so many people bearing the same surname, there are bound to be some cases where the name was that of both parents.
