Albany, New York. December 11, 1890
A dispatch from Unadille, N.Y. just received in this city says that Ex Senator Frank B. Arnold of Unadilla, the representative of the Twenty Third District in the Senate of 1888 – 9, committed suicide in his law office some time between 6 and 7 o’clock this morning. He was found dead in the office about 10 o’clock with a bullet hole in his temple and a revolver clutched in his right hand. No cause is assigned for the rash deed. He came to America while a child and was educated at Gilbertsville Academy and at Hamilton College. He taught school with ability and was admitted to the bar, where he achieved distinction and success. He became supervisor of Unadilla in 1879 and held office unit 1885. Part of the time he was chairman of the board. He was member of assembly in 1885, 1886 and 1887 and took an important part in legislature affairs. In 1887 he was a member of the special committee of which Colonel Alexander S. Bacon was chairman, appointed to investigate the conduct of Brooklyn’s municipal affairs. In 1888 and 1889 he was a member of the state Senate. The district represented comprises the counties of Otsego, Herkimer and Madison. Mr Arnold was a member of this body and among the leaders. He was a pronounced Platt man. The investigation of the sugar and other trials was conducted by a committee of which he was chairman. He was defeated for renomination by Titus Sheard of Herkimer and for Congress last fall in the 24th District, comprising the counties of Schoharie, Osego and Herkimer. He was defeated by George Van Horn, the Democratic Candidate. Mr Arnold was a widower and leaves one daughter. He lived in a fine mansion near Osego lake and was a most genial and hospitable man. During the last two years of his life in Albany he formed one of a household including Sen. Eugene F. O’Connor of Brooklyn; Sen. Eugene S. Ives of New York and the late Assemblyman Robert Ray Hamilton. Robert Ray Hamilton, whose tragic story has been so terribly closed in the wilds of the Yellowstone Country.
The United Press representative informed Colonel William of the sad event and he immediately sent a despatch to Governor Bill in New York. Mr Arnold was in Albany less than two weeks, and a visitor at the executive chamber. He appeared cheerful and did not speak of his defeat. People here who were acquainted with Mr Arnold was very much startled at the news. It is said that he has continually brooded over his wife’s death, which occurred about two years ago. Only lately he deplored the fact that in erecting a proposal monument he would cut off the last tie between the dead and himself, and do the last act of kindness possible. Secretary of State Rice paid a splendid tribute to his memory today, saying the he was an honest upright man.
