Donated Material: Graveyard Inscriptions

Ballyea Graveyard

Ballyea Cemetery, Ballyvullagan, Co. Clare: Transcription Project

The Clare Roots Society

In its on-going activity of recording gravestone inscriptions in Clare, the Society undertook the work in Ballyea Cemetery, Ballyvullagan, Co. Clare in 2011. The work was voluntarily carried out by Robert Cullen with the assistance of Cissie Collins (who provided all the maiden names and addresses not shown on the headstones), John Joe Garvey and Frank Hogan.

Ballyea cemetery is a small graveyard surrounding the RC chapel dedicated to St. John the Baptist. The cemetery was consecrated as a burial ground in 19?? and the first burial there was in May 1942. As the cemetery is still in use the headstone photographs and inscriptions are as per 30th June 2011.
Based on the experiences of the Society in undertaking similar work in Drumcliff, Killone, Clare Abbey and other local cemeteries an agreed template for recording the inscriptions was used. As some of those buried there were well known to the volunteers, maiden names and addresses, where not recorded on the headstones, are shown in brackets. A map of the grounds numbering all existing graves, with or without headstones, in addition to some possible new graves, was produced. 209 headstones were recorded and photographed.

This cemetery is very well maintained and no broken headstones were noted

It is hoped that the findings will be of interest to the local community and to genealogists locally. Clare Roots Society wishes to record its gratitude to those volunteers who undertook the work.

It is inevitable that mistakes will occur when copying and recording inscriptions. While every effort has been made to record the individual gravestones as accurately as possible, Clare Roots Society wishes to apologise to any individual or family whose family records are recorded in error. Should any family or individual become aware of errors to these records, please contact
