Ordnance Survey Letters by John O'Donovan and Eugene Curry, 1839

Parish of Killonohan

  1. Situation; Name; Old Ph. Church said to have been built by St. Columbkille after his expulsion from Aran by St. Einné; Crimlin (Cruimghlin) old Church; Is a primitive Irish Church and probably the one erected by St. Columbkille, and not the old Ph. Church of Killonaghan.

  2. Faunaroosk old Castle; Formoyle (the Killeen of a small burial place for children so called) and probably the site of a Church in Formoyle E.; Caher Bannagh, Cathair Beamach, i.e., the Pinnacled Caher in same Townland; Caheranadarrish in Formoyle W.; Derivation of the name - 210. Caher Balliney (fort) in Balliney S. which has been used since its erection & is at present inhabited; Caher Ballely in Ballely; Cahernagree, Fort of the Horses in Knockaun Mountain Townland; Sliabh Oighe h-Airm Hill in do.; Derivation of the name; Liscooncra (fort) in Townland to which it gives name.
