TV Times

by Kate Thompson

Day after day,
Night after window-rattling night,
The West wind.

The West wind,
Heavy from the sea
Across the cold-shriven, rain-driven land,
Wet up to the knee.

Brace your back against it,
Pull up your hood.

For something more slowly blowing from the East
May shake you more than this.
Replace your slates.

The damp-slow sods might yet defy
The Easterly chill
Which blows against the soul.

Taken from ‘Inside Outside’ (1990), page 37.
