Cois leasa dhom go huaigneach ar uair na maidne im’ aonar
Le hais na Sionna i mbruach chnoic ba shnua-ghlaise scáil
Sea do dhearcas ainnir uaibhreach, ba shuaimhneach, ba shéanmhar
Go réaltannach aerach, ag téarnamh im’dháil.
Bhí a dlaoifholt daite feactha fíor go cíortha,
caite, creathach síos
Go slíomach, snasta, sreathach, siar, go slaodach, go feoir.
A réalt-dhearca réidh glas ar éadan gan cas gan
críon,
Ag géar-chaitheamh gaethe i gcléibhte gach treoin.
Ba gheanúil geal a héadan gan ealaín ach óige
Is a mala ghartha caol deas ba chéir shnoite cóir,
Na leacain leabhair aol dath ba thréanmhar an rós-bhruith
Is a beol tanaí beo-bhlasta, córach gan cáim
Do líon mé ar fad le rachta cléibh, do bhíogas
mear, mar ealtain éin.
Do bhíos ar cheal, im’ stad go léir, ag léirdhearc
a cló.
Do shíleas gur sí-bhean í do shíolraigh
thar lear i gcéin,
Nó an chaoinbhean chneasta ó chroí an leasa, a
bhí ag teacht im’dháil
Tagann an véarsa deiridh anseo ón mbileog cheoil thíos.
De bhrí nár bhfeas gur léir dhom, cén
ghaoth chughainn do sheol í,
Fiarraím (fionnaím?) di cén treabh ónar
théarnaigh a pór
Nó’r bhfíor gurb’ise’n spéirbhean
chuir an Trae thoir fá cheo bhruith,
Nó Déirdre tré’r leonadh na tréanfhir
gan treoir, (nó leanadh)
Nó’n bhean do mhill clann Lir le draíocht, nó’n
bhean do leonaigh Fianna Fhinn,
Nó’n bhean ón mBéinn do dhlígh ar
Chonall triall seal ’na deoidh;
An Cheárnait dob áilne nó an Bhláthnait
ba ghile gnaoi,
Nó an ghrian-bhean a d’fhág Inis Fáil bheith
faoi bhrón?
A rough translation of Cois Leasa Dom (Diarmuid de Faoite)
Beside the ringfort, lonesome, at the waking hour alone,
Next to the Shannon on the bank of a hill of green shade,
I saw a young woman, proud, tranquil and prosperous,
With a starlike gaiety, approaching me.
Her hair bright coloured, curling, true, combed and tossed, hung trembling,
Smooth, shining, tressled, long, flowing as the long grass.
Her eyes star-gazing, green on a fair face with no twist nor decay,
Flashing rays of light into each and every crevice.
Her bright, loving countenance, youth its only artful touch,
And her nice, narrow, close brows, were finely sculpted true,
Her cheekbones as smooth as limestone bookends painted with the finest
boiled rose,
Her lively, tasty, thin lips, shapely without blemish.
My being filled with a pounding in my chest and I startled suddenly
like a flock of birds.
I was stunned, transfixed, at the form before my eyes.
I thought she was a fairy woman who came from a far off land,
Or the kind-hearted, gentle woman from the heart of the ringfort within,
who was coming towards me.
Since it appeared it was not clear to me, what wind had blown her towards
us,
I ask her what tribe from which her breed had come,
Or is it true that she was the beautiful woman for whom Troy in the
east had been placed under siege?
Or Deirdre for whom the strong men were injured without cause?
Or the woman who destroyed Clann Lir with magic, or the woman who wounded
Finn’s men,
Or the woman from the Mountain who obligated Conall to follow her a
while,
The most beautiful Cearnait or the comeliest Bláthnaid,
Or the sun-woman (goddess/ Brighid) who has left Inis Fáil (Ireland)
in such sorrow?
