The Irish Tourist Association’s Topographical and General Survey was carried out in 1942/3 to assess the level of tourist amenities and facilities that existed in the country, and to identify areas with potential for development. Towns and villages were surveyed under the following headings: Natural Features, Antiquities and Historic Associations, Sports and Games, Amenities and General Information, and Accommodation.

The original, completed, forms for County Clare were donated to Clare County Library by the Irish Tourist Association (now Fáilte Ireland) and are held in the Local Studies Centre, Harmony Row, Ennis. The material collected for Clare towns under the Amenities and General Information, and Accommodation headings are reproduced here.

Photographs taken to accompany the survey can be seen on Foto
